A Volcanic Work of Art: Golden Lava Bun

This was from Toast Box at Shaw Centre, Singapore. It's a relatively new branch, and it has some interesting offerings of traditional pastries with a new twist to it.

In particular, I enjoyed this "Golden Lava" bun, which is basically decadent flowing salted-egg custard filling in a volcano shaped-bun. I suppose it's not terribly "unusual", but I have tried salted egg buns from various bakeries and none of them have the filling quite as flowy as this one, nor have I seen one done in this perfect volcano style.

Not only is it pleasing to the eye, but egg custard lava is also a lot more like real lava in colour than chocolate, which is used in the typical lava pastries. So this was really a work of art to be appreciated by all the senses (except hearing), and a real pleasure to partake of.

The custard was wonderfully milky and sweet-salty. In particular, I liked that the bun was baked to a mild-crusty bite, and had these little grainy things, reminiscent of that in corn muffins, that give it a very interesting texture. It's a lovely complement to the gooey custard indeed!

Aside from the food, the ambience of the cafe was also lovely, with a somewhat retro theme - Teresa Teng-type music playing in the background and all that. The space also felt open, with a bright and soft feel to it... wooden seats and tables a comfortable distance apart against a warm white background. I'll definitely be back to chill, soak in the atmosphere and try out their other interesting little bites!
