I tried the next two flavours of the box of Yong Sheng mooncakes. You can read about the first two and view the full 2 boxes of 8 flavours here.
I must say I really enjoyed these two flavours a lot more than the first two. The red bean one wasn't as sweet as some other red bean mooncakes (e.g. Bengawan Solo's). The paste also didn't seem as oily, although some who prefer the oily version might think of this as slightly dry perhaps. But it was definitely not dry, and quite moist. There are both walnuts and melon seeds in this too! I especially loved the bite texture of the walnut, and the melon seeds provided extra chewy texture. But what I loved the most was the fragrant rose scent. It complemented the earthy red bean flavour really well! It wasn't too strong, but it was distinct. Curiously, however, I didn't see rose in the ingredients list, so it must have come under the artificial flavour ingredient. Despite that, it was a good pairing with the red bean! The pineapple one was also very nice. The pineapple paste is similar to that of Taiwanese pineapple tarts, with a melon fragrance rather than the clove flavour like local nonya versions of pineapple tarts feature. As you can see, there's salted egg yolk lava in the middle. This wedge already had more of it compared to the other wedges, so I would have appreciated if they had put in a bit more lava. However, the combination was great - the sweet freshening pineapple paste with melon fragrance complemented the salty, creamy fullness of the lava really well! And it's a nice light and fruity break from all the other oily and heavy mooncake fillings!
Together, these two flavours were worth the entire box. These boxes are definitely something I'll look out for again next year!
