This is officially called Sweet Pumpkin Bread by 1946 Bakery. Look at how round, stubby and cute it is! What a pretty work of art and almost too cute to eat!
Instead of a bread as the name suggests, however, it was more like a mochi (a la Brazilian Pão de queijo) with pumpkin paste filling, with coloured flour sprinkled on top to give the bread-like texture on the surface.
As you can see from the image, instead of the fluffy light bread texture, it is a glossy and dense mochi. There was no particular flavor to the mochi that I noticed, unlike the Pão de queijo. But like the Pão de queijo or mochi, it is better and softer when warmed up a bit. Probably not a good idea to reheat it until it is dry and cracked though, as it then becomes hard.
The filling tastes like a very natural pumpkin soup, but paste version. It had a buttery, milky and smooth taste to it, so I guess they added some butter and milk component. But it wasn't savoury, just very slightly sweet, which I loved.
The filling's texture is a dense paste which comes across as more crumbly than moist, which I personally liked, as it feels more natural, like a real pumpkin that is mashed (i.e. pumpkin version of mashed potatoes). According to some websites, it is a bean paste, but I think it has at least a significant amount of actual pumpkin, and I wouldn't be surprised if there is little to no bean either because it's quite close to a natural pumpkin pastey texture of the Japanese kabocha sort.
Overall, an amazing treat for both the palate and eyes. I will try to get my hands on their other vegetable buns as well. They were sold out and this was the only one left when I visited.
