Pardon the McCafe run... but this one's from the Hong Kong version of the McCafe menu... green tea molten cake with red bean filling! I thought it was a unique twist, so I decided to feature it.
It's a seasonal offering for their Christmas menu! Glad I managed to catch it before they took it off. Here's the official promo image from their site.
Anyway, I thought the red-green combination using green tea and red bean as Christmas colours was ingenious. And the actual thing actually had an awesome and fitting icing design sprinkled over it, mimicking snowy mistletoe leaves! An amazing aesthetic experience and laudable creativity indeed!
Also, unlike my experiences with the differences between the promo images and the actual food items for Singapore's McDonald's, the actual product didn't differ too much from the promo image, as you can see...
Now, on to the review proper... The red bean filling was pretty much the smooth red bean paste that they serve as a dessert in East Asian cuisine, with extra whole beans added in for texture. It was a bit on the sweet side, but thankfully, that was evened out by the cake.
I would say the cake had a rich and bitter matcha flavour rather than the thin and fragrant normal green tea (sencha) taste... so I guess it's more of a matcha molten cake. That's a merit, because I think the matcha flavour goes well with the floury taste of the cake, and it complemented the earthy and sweet flavour of the red bean paste very well.
Texture-wise, it was rich and moist, so no complaints there.
HK$16, or S$2.75 a piece if you order it with coffee as a set. Not a bad deal for a molten cake, not to mention that food prices are usually higher than this in Hong Kong. Good job McCafe!
