Yummy gold for a prosperous new year... Prosperity Coin Corn Kakiage

Finally getting down to the Chinese New Year posts... now that the wave of visiting has subsided. Let's start with prosperity gimmicks! "Prosperity Coin Corn Kakiage." Ever so popular with the Chinese culture. Ok, not really a gimmick, since it was really tasty. But really, the name could be less unwieldy. This was from MOS Burger, Singapore. Ah, if a Japanese mind was behind the name, that would explain it.
Corn kakiage chock full of bright corn kernels. It was nicely browned and crisp on the outside.
I was really glad that I looked past the tacky name and ordered it anyway because it was *really* good and totally worth the $1 I paid for this. Juicy, sweet and golden yellow kernels of corn were embedded in batter and deep fried to produce this nicely-browned savoury corn cake.

The batter was not the typical crispy and hard kind that you get with most kakiages, but was like the takoyaki (octopus ball) type of batter - soft and moist with some slightly crispy edges. Together with the softness of the corn, it was blissfully squishy.

The corn was very sweet and its flavour permeated the batter for a very wholesome corn and wheat taste. It was a very simple and naturally-flavoured, yet tasty snack, unlike most other stuff like fishcakes which are filled with artificial flavours or texture enhancing additives.

The only thing I didn't like was that it was a tad too greasy. That was easily solved though by padding it in the paper serviettes they provided... it retained its crispiness even after that. If they had dried out the oil more before serving it though, that would have been perfect.

They're also having some promotion... it's just 50 cents if you purchase it with their seasonal salmon burger. (Image below is the official promo image from their official website.)
