I saw a super interesting item on the menu and had to try it. In China, they've been adding fruits to coffee, such as orange and apple, but usually only to the Americano versions without milk. This was the first time I saw something normally associated with salads and vegetables added to coffee.
But in theory, it actually makes sense. Many avocado shakes in Asia add a bit of dark, toffee-like gula melaka syrup or brown sugar to the drink, and the complex darkness of the syrup complements the bland, slightly grassy and creamy avocado quite well.
Furthermore, they listed condensed milk as an ingredient, which I thought might pair well with the avocado's creaminess. So I thought I would try this.
It also looked very pretty and instagram-worthy when served.
But unfortunately, it was a disappointment - the avocado was not blended into the coffee at all, from what I could taste and see. The avocado on the side is pretty much scooped out from the fruit. So it ended up just being a normal Spanish latte served in an avocado shell.
I think they also picked a slightly tangy or acidic blend as well which went well with the condensed milk, but totally did not go well with the avocado. I think a dark chocolatey or nutty blend would have gone better.
Furthermore, it was hot (that's the only option), and usually avocadoes are enjoyed chilled or cold, so it was really strange and weird. The coffee on its own was fine, but it got disgusting sometimes when the avocado bits got in.
So overall, interesting concept, but poor execution. I think avocado latte still has potential as a good drink, but it needs to mimick the avocado shakes more - serve it cold, blend it, and use a nutty or chocolatey coffee blend. Condensed milk is probably still fine.
It's also possible that they just intended it as a marketing gimmick for instagram, because their other menu items focus quite a lot on the visuals (which is actually a good thing).
