I was once again delightfully surprised by a bake from Kamome Bakery. This initially plain-looking bake humbly called "Mocha Croissant" turned out to be concealing a hidden treat. I had taken a short video just to capture the crackling sound of the crispy croissant's layered flakes, but swooned inside once I saw some chocolatey coffee goodness ooze out and was grateful to have caught it on video. Check that out.
Based on other videos I saw online, I think it was just supposed to be cream, but that probably melted when I reheated it in the toaster.
In terms of taste, the quality was high as well.
The coffee flavour was more toffee-like instead of bitter or dark roast-like. Similar to instant coffee, Nescafe or Kopiko candy taste. It might not be a good taste to a coffee connoisseur enjoying gourmet coffee, but I thought it went well in this case as toffee notes tend to pair well with sweets and pastries.
But that's not all... the dark spots you see in the three folds are actually thin dark chocolate slabs, like what you get in pain au chocolat, except there are 3, not 1.
The dark chocolate provided the nutty dark taste that rounded out the coffee's toffee notes, so it was a perfectly executed pairing.
Finally, the pastry was super crispy after light reheating. Well, you can hear it for yourself in the video. And inside, it was moist with a strong wheat grainy taste, which I liked.
There was also a lovely dark cocoa powder dusted over one side of it, which explains why the right side seems darker. That is not a shadow, but a result of the artistically dusted cocoa powder. It deepened in colour after reheating.
The only downside was that the pastry did not taste much of butter unfortunately. Perhaps they used unsalted butter or the butter taste got covered up by the chocolate and coffee liquid. But the strong wheat taste did make up for it, so I was fine with this.
