Matcha Scone Sandwich by Kamome Bakery

When I saw the attractive picture of this green and pink treat, I had to try it. It's called Matcha Scone Sandwich by Kamome Bakery (Simply, Daily branch), but it's actually more like a matcha strawberry scone sandwich. The beautiful pink cream in the middle is strawberry milk cream.

Apart from the interesting twist on the cream, there are also white chocolate chips in the matcha scone, which show up as white and dark brown (caramelised) in the picture, as well as a couple of sliced almond flakes on top.

Tastewise, this is possibly my favourite scone currently. The matcha tasted real, a bit like ceremonial matcha found in premium matcha specialty outlets. Specifically, it tasted fresh, grassy and with unami, unlike those bitter woody ones that taste more like sencha or Chinese green tea. It also wasn't too sweet, with most of the sweetness coming from the white chocolate chips. As you can imagine, the grassy and earthy matcha umami conplemented the creamy milkiness of the white chocolate perfectly.

Then for the cream. It also wasn't too sweet, which I loved. I don't know what milk cream comprises as there doesn't seem to be a standard recipe, but it tasted like a fresh chantilly cream with light whipped texture and strawberry compote mixed in. In short - the perfect traditional combination used in English scone tea sets, just fluffier. As you can imagine, the added creaminesses enhanced the white choc and matcha blend, and the light strawberry fragrance and tartness brought some pleasant boldness to the otherwise mellow tastes. Indeed, matcha-strawberry pairings are quite an emerging trend in cafes lately, the earliest I remember being Starbucks' strawberry matcha drink starting a few years back.

Overall, it was an extremely well curated and paired menu item. I've ordered it more than once already, which is not my norm.
