Purple Sweet Potato Taro Egg Tart, Macau Portuguese style, by Zok Noodle House

I chanced on this special edition of the Macau Portuguese egg tart while passing by a Hong Kong and Macau-focused noodle house that originated from Malaysia, called Zok Noodle House. This was a purple sweet potato and taro flavour, whereby they put a sweet potato taro filling into the egg tart, similar to the salted egg yolk golden lava egg tart by Toast Box.

On the surface, it looked rather like a normal egg tart, but with a tinge of dark brown which is actually the purple colouration of the crust, representing the purple sweet potato and taro colours.

When you bite into it, the purple paste is very clear.

It looked more purple and brighter in real life - the camera doesn't seem to capture the richness of the colour. So it was very pretty in my opinion, like the purple sweet potato tart from Okinawa. I thought the marketing picture of it below was quite a fair representation to the real thing, even though the purple might look a bit bright at first.

It was even better taste-wise. The taro and sweet potato taste and fragrance were very prominent. The interesting thing is that normally sweet potato is more fragrant, but in this case, it was the taro's sweet, buttery and nutty fragrance that dominated. The sweet potato's honey-butter fragrance kind of blended it, but it complemented the taro very well. These flavours seemed quite natural, which I loved.

Overall, they both complemented the creamy egg custard very well.

The crust was also very well done - paper-like crispiness and very light in texture, which is unusual for Macau egg tarts, which tend to be rather heavy with a greasy and doughy texture.

This is definitely one of my favourite egg tarts, and I hope it becomes more mainstream.
