7-Cafe Baked Apple Brûlée Style Butter Sugar Sand Tree by Gin no Budou, Ginza Tokyo and 7-Eleven Collaboration

Gin no Budo is a well-known patisserie in Japan with a spinoff called Sugar Butter Tree that specialises in a product called Sugar Butter Sand Tree. This product is a rusk-like cereal biscuit sandwiching a filling of white chocolate cream. For the autumn, Seven Premium (the brand producing 7-Eleven's house brand of premium pastries and confectionaries) collaborated with Sugar Butter Tree to produce an apple brûlée version of Sugar Butter Sand Tree called Seven Cafe Baked Apple Brûlée Style Butter Sugar Sand Tree.

In this season special version, the white chocolate filling is replaced with apple and cinnamon flavoured cream, and the biscuit is also flavoured. Hence, you can see in the picture that the filling is yellow.

Each large packet contains 3 individually wrapped pieces. I believe it is around the same price as the original flavour sold by Sugar Butter Tree.

So how was the taste? Overall, I really liked it.

The biscuit had the texture of a leaf pie, but crispier like a rusk. It reminds me of the kaya butter toasts sold in Singapore or Southeast Asia whereby the bread is slow-toasted to a rusk-like crisp.

The cream in the middle was like a white chocolate cream with a lush floral apple fragrance of the Japanese variety. It is quite different in quality from the apple flavour in the West, which leans a bit tart and with brighter fruity notes.

There were also notes of cinnamon beneath the apple's fragrance and buttery cream.

Overall, it reminded me of of a Japanese apple pie that is not sour, and with super crispy rusk instead of the normal tart or pie base.

Here is the ingredients list. The interesting ingredients to note which are unique to this flavour are the apple juice powder and the cinnamon powder. Of course, there are quality ingredients too such as butter and cocoa butter. And most notably, there was no shortening or margarine! So it is truly a premium standard.

Based on the marketing releases, it seems that the butter and apple powder are mixed into both the biscuit and the cream filling, whereas the cinnamon powder is only featured in the biscuit. I thought this explained why the flavour of cinnamon felt a bit fainter and something I had to pause and think about before noticing as a separate flavour.

Fnally, here is a close-up of the logos showing the collaboration between 7-Eleven and Gin no Budo, Ginza, Tokyo.

I absolutely love that this is sold in any 7-Eleven and is very affordable. Many of these treats tend to be sold only at certain department stores where the brand has an outlet, which makes it difficult to pick up unless you're in the area.

It is both a solid snack for personal consumption and also something you can buy as a tourist to bring back to your home country to gift friends and family!
