Tried these other interesting cookies from Old Seng Choong. They also seem sold out, but you can check out their other cookies here. These are the Cereal Prawn Cookies and Bak Kut Teh Cookies. These dishes are signature to the region (Singapore and Malaysia), and Old Seng Choong did a wonderful job of replicating their spice mixes and taste in these savoury cookies.
Their tins were really pretty and reminiscent of the typical Peranakan artwork and containers, so these are great as gifts, especially if you have international visitors or friends.. That said, I wish they had more sustainable, lightweight packaging for customers who want to purchase these cookies for their own consumption.
Bak Kut Teh is a pork soup made by brewing a concoction of spices sealed in a tea bag. It literally means "meat bone tea". Old Seng Choong did very well to replicate the rich garlicky and peppery taste of the soup. It had a very full and umami flavour. You should be able to see the black flecks of black pepper in the picture. The nuts (I believe walnuts) also gave a very nice texture to the cookie. The cereal prawn cookies were equally good in flavour. The curry leaf and spice mix was very distinct, and made these cookies very heart. There were also bits of actual prawn in it!A great souvenir for international visitors who want a taste of the dish that they can bring home, and for locals, a great snack when you're feeling peckish and craving something hearty and savoury without wanting the trouble of purchasing a full cereal prawn or bak kut teh dish!
