This is actually officially called Pu-Pu-Pu-Pumpkin Tart Ice Cream by Häagen-Dazs. (Or Pa-Pa-Pa-Pumpkin in Japanese.) It's one of the more interesting Haagen-Dazs ice creams in a while, and given the timing, I'm guesssing that it was in commemoration of either Halloween or else potentially Thanksgiving. The latter isn't celebrated much in Japan, but there are still Black Friday sales.
It turned out to be one of my favourite Haagen-Dazs flavours.
First of all, the crunchy layer on top was like a very crunchy tart topping that was like one big crunchy biscuit covering the entire cup. It was like an extremely crunchy apple crumble crunch that was not moist at all. There was a butter and flour taste to it. The 3rd photo below shows that the entire layer of crunchy tart base sank into the ice cream when I tried to break it with the spatula.
Underneath it, the ice cream was like a very eggy pumpkin pudding with the egg in the Haagen-Dazs ice cream blending with the pumpkin sauce. The pumpkin sauce had very rich nutty and buttery notes, although not so much the earthy or vegetal notes usually present in kabocha.
It also had a very clean and pure egg, butter and cream pudding taste without artificial oils, margarine corn notes or waxy feel. Very melty and smooth.
There were also caramel notes from the trace of caramel sauce that were dark and nutty without any cloying sweetness or burnt taste. I didn't realise there was caramel sauce at first until tasting it, then when I dug towards the bottom I saw the dark brown streaks and confirmed its presence from the ingredients list. You can see some very thin dark brown streaks in the photo below.
Finally, here is the ingredients list. They used a lot of different types of pumpkin ingredients - pumpkin powder, pumpkin puree, pumpkin sauce, pumpkin coating, pumpkin paste and pumpkin cookie, whatever that is. In the pumpkin sauce, there was also butter and caramel syrup. There was also egg yolk in various parts, such as the pumpkin sauce and also in the ice cream itself. Finally, besides pumpkin cookie, there was also graham cookie.
