Ong Lai Latte (Pineapple Latte) by Luckin Coffee

This is the third fruit flavoured caffe latte by Luckin Coffee. (Their first was the Brown Sugar Plum Latte and the second was the Gardenia Pear Latte.) So I was eager to try it. It is a part of their Chinese New Year festive menu.

The colour of the milk portion of the drink latte was a very distinct and pleasing pastel yellow. It is somewhat masked by the yellow light and furniture, but if you compare it with the white Luckin logo printed on the cup, you'll see how much yellower the milky part is.

The taste was a most fascinating experience. There was a very distinct pineapple flavour that reminded me of a well-ripened Brazilian churrasco grilled pineapple, where there is barely any tangyness and it is mostly sweet, fragrant and tropical.

The coffee even complemented the pineapple flavour well as it was reminiscent of the charred bits of the grilled churrasco pineapple which were caramelised. So it came across as a darkly caramelised pineapple drink.

The first sip after mixing it felt like the coffee was a tad too bitter and it did not blend as well with the fruitiness of the pineapple, but after the second sip, it somehow ended up becoming quite pleasant. Maybe because the ice melted a bit more or my palate got used to the coffee.

I felt that it was somewhat sweeter than other drinks of Luckin's despite ordering the least sweet version.

Overall, it was quite an intriguing but well-balanced gourmet experience. But it is still a bit unusual for me say that this is a favourite. I think I preferred the Pear Latte more for some reason, possibly because the coffee was much less prominent there. I didn't quite like the Plum Latte so I think this Pineapple Latte is better.
