I tried this seasonal offering from Family Mart because I was curious what "Terrine Style" meant. It's officially called Beni-Haruka Sweet Potato Cake, Terrine Style.
Terrine originally referred to a savoury meat and vegetable load in French cuisine, but seems to have evolved to refer to something dense and flourless, especially a heavy fudge cake. Well, this sweet potato one has flour, based on the ingredients list (photo below), so I assume that it just refers to something denser than a normal cake.
If you're looking for something like fudge, this isn't it. But it does deliver on being relatively dense and moist.
It was pretty much like a lump of thick, creamy and moist mashed potato in texture, except that it was like sweet potato in taste. The ingredients list has a bunch of stuff listed, but it came across like pure sweet potato except creamy.
It was very fragrant with floral, honey sweet and vanilla notes.
There also seemed to be 2 different layers - a lighter, creamier top layer and a slightly darker and denser bottom one.
In terms of taste, the bottom one seemed denser, earthier and nuttier. The texture was thicker and closer to a pure mashed potato texture.
The top half seemed slightly custard-like or pudding-like.
Fnally, here is the ingredients list and how the wrapper looks like. Notably, the first ingredient was sweet potato paste, and flour, while present, came in as the 4th ingredient, so they didn't use much compared to normal cakes. And although they used a bunch of texture modifiers and non-glucose sweeteners, the main ingredients were all pure - sweet potato, egg, sugar, milk products and flour.
Overall, this was one of the nicer sweet potato snacks I had that felt relatively pure like the real thing without being too dry.
