MOS Burger launched some interesting vegetable-flavoured treats for its birthday on 12 March - vegetable milk shakes in spinach, purple potato and carrot flavours, as well as corresponding waffle flavours - spinach waffle, purple potato waffle and carrot waffle. I decided to try the spinach vegetable milk shake and the purple potato waffle on this visit. On to the spinach vegetable shake in this post.
At first, I thought it was very weird, with the lady's finger (okra) sticking out from the drink. There were also cheap-looking colourful marshmallows which I totally ignored because I couldn't imagine how it might go with a spinach-flavoured drink. There was also a little scoop of ice cream and a refreshing large sprig of mint leaves.
I proceeded to try the drink itself first, and surprisingly I really loved it. They had paired the spinach with a matcha latte-like base, which I thought was an ingenious combination.
It was exactly like a rich and creamy matcha milk shake, but with no bitterness at all, unlike the normal matcha shakes from most cafes.Furthermore, because they added the spinach, the leafy or grassy chlorophyll taste came out stronger, which made it more complex than just an average matcha milk shake. In fact, I would say it comes close to a premium ceremonial matcha milk shake because of the grassy fragrance and lack of bitterness, but it's at half the price.
It does lack a little bit of the depth and complexity of ceremonial matcha of course, but I think if you added ceremonial matcha powder to milkshake, the creaminess and fullness of the ice cream might drown out the complexity anyway.
I then ate the mint leaves with some ice cream and shake, and it was a lovely party in my mouth - a burst of minty herbal flavour with rich matcha and spinach, complemented by lovely vanilla ice cream.
Finally, I examined the okra and realised it was a freeze-dried vegetable chip version and completely healthy and edible! It was very crispy and crunchy, not soggy at all, and the slight salt enhanced the okra flavour - see how it maintains its crisp form even after I bite it. The freeze-dried version was also obviously less slimy than the normal vegetable, so it was very enjoyable, and a lovely vegetable combination with the spinach-matcha milk shake.
(In case you haven't heard, salt actually goes really well with milk! Like salted caramel ice cream or dipping McDonald's fries into their soft serve. You should try it if you haven't!)
Overall, it was a surprisingly delightful discovery, as not many people execute such unexpected combinations and flavours well. I hope to try the carrot and purple potato versions as well while they are still on the menu. (Click the menu photo to enlarge.)
I'll review the purple potato waffle in the next post.
