Chocolate Dorayaki with Chocolate Whipped Cream and Chocolate Ganache Cream by Meiji and Seven Premium
I initially tried this because I'd not tried chocolate dorayaki before, but it turned out to be one of the most decadent chocolate snacks I've had in a while.
This was actually a collaboration between 7-Eleven and Meiji Milk Chocolate to celebrate Meiji's 100th anniversary.
It was 2 decadent milk chocolate pancakes sandwiching chocolate whipped cream and what they call chocolate cream, but which turned out to be a rather thick fudge-like chocolate ganache.
What made it so good was that the chocolate dorayaki pancakes were very intensely flavoured, I believe with cocoa powder, such that it was like a less sweet and slightly milder fudge cookie, which I felt was unusual for a pancake. The pancakes were also very moist and relatively fluffy compared to the usual pancake or dorayaki, which can be relatively thin or dry when not done well. You can see from the photos how dark the middle of the pancake is, and perhaps you can also see the dark middle part glistening with moisture and also the soft and slightly fluffy pancake texture.
The slightly lighter brown parts squished between the pancake and light brown whipped cream is the fudgy ganache-like cream. It reminded me of the chocolate fudge used as an ice cream topping, like in McDonald's chocolate fudge sundae, but not nearly as sweet. Basically, it was loaded with cocoa goodness.
This is the ingredients list. Since it is actually a dorayaki and not exactly a Western style dessert, it had mizuame, a traditional Japanese sweetener with malty or maltose like notes, and I believe that these malt notes greatly enhanced the cocoa's flavour as well, adding to the fullness of the rich cocoa taste. As expected, there is also actual cream and chocolate used.
Overall, I thought that this was the perfect decadent rendition of a chocolate dorayaki. It is as intense as chocolate fudge cakes, but also has the light fluffiness of pancakes. So somehow it didn't come across as heavy or too sweet. Quite a unique combination!
