Daigaku-Imo (Sweet Potato) Pudding Drink with Mitarashi Warabi-Mochi Jelly by 7-Eleven (まぜまぜスイーツ大学芋みたいなラテ)

This is a semi-drinkable dessert by 7-Eleven for the sweet potato fall season. The official name of this is quite unwieldy in both English and Japanese. The official English name is Candied Sweet Potato Sauce-Flavoured Bracken-Starch Jelly with Sweet Potato and Whipped Cream while the official Japanese name is まぜまぜスイーツ大学芋みたいなラテ, which means something like "Latte Like a Candied Sweet Potato - mix-it-up dessert". Basically, it's meant to be that delicious caramelised candied savoury sweet potato roasted with sweet soy sauce glaze, in a form that you can drink like a jelly.

Despite the unwieldy description and name, it turned out to be an amazing concept and one of my favourite sweet potato treats from convenience stores.

The 3 layers are basically whipped cream at the top, yellow sweet potato jelly pudding in the middle, and sweet savoury soy sauce jelly at the bottom.

The bottom savoury layer was the star. It was like a sweet shoyu kanten jelly akin to mitarashi dango sauce in role. There were also caramel notes, and it seems to represent the caramelised glaze on the roasted sweet potato.

The middle sweet potato pudding had a nice and mellow sweet potato flavour which was mildly fragrant, earthy and nutty.

The top layer of whipped cream helped to give the jelly and pudding some body and smooth creamy texture. The sprinkled topping above that was like a mix of crunchy brittle-like caramel bits with black sesame seeds which had a fragrant roasted flavour, but which wasn't too crispy compared to the brittle bits.

Overall, each mouthful of all 3 layers provided a delightful explosion of flavour and an amazing balance of sweet and savoury, and crunchy and bouncy soft textures.

Finally, here is the picture of the packaging with the label and ingredients list (click photo to enlarge). Some ingredients caught my attention in particular. For example, milk was the first ingredient. They also used real satsuma-imo paste. Interestingly, there was both mirin and honey. As expected, there was shoyu or soy sauce, but more interestingly was that shoyu tare was also listed separately. Tare is like sauce in Japan, used as dips or for meat, and often contains some vinegar. For the jelly and pudding texture, besides the usual kanten, there was also warabi powder or bracken starch powder, which explains the name. Although, I'm not sure if it was for the middle or bottom layer or both. Finally, the ingredients for the sprinkle on top seemed to be caramel chips and sesame. The sub-ingredients for the caramel chips weren't listed though, unfortunately.

Definitely a unique and delectable snack that I would highly recommend while the season lasts!
