Little Butter Latte by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute.

Buah Long Long Juice

The name was bewildering enough for me that I didn't need to think of any creative twist for this post's title... I'd never have guessed that there'd be a fruit named "buah long long"... but well, yes, it does exist. The official name is Spondias dulcis , and buah long long is how the Singaporean Chinese know it. It's known as kedondong in Indonesia, pomme cythere in Trinidad & Tobago and some other countries, June plum in Bermuda and Jamaica, juplon in Costa Rica, golden apple in Barbados and Guyana, jobo indio in Venezuela, cajá-manga and cajarana in Brazil (see, they couldn't even decide on one name in the same country), amra in Malaysia, and quả cóc in Vietnam. That's a mind-boggling list of names if I've ever seen one. What's more amazing is that its juice is being sold by a rather common food stall. Ceylon Yuan Yang with Milk vs First Crush Tea Latte by Luckin Coffee

Luckin launched another interesting milky drink for their festive menu this Lunar New Year, so I tried it when I got a good coupon. This is Ceylon Yuan Yang with milk. Yuan Yang (鸳鸯) refers to a pair of male (yuan) and female (yang) Mandarin ducks, and figuratively means a good and complementary pairing. When it comes to drinks, it refers to a mix of tea and coffee, which I do agree is a great combination. Another term for it as applied to matcha would be the dirty matcha, although the term Yuan Yang is usually used only when the tea component is Chinese in origin. Besides this drink, Luckin has also launched other Yuan Yang drinks, all with their standard coffee, but they vary the type of tea used. Previously, I had tried their Summer Breeze, Jasmine and Spring variations and especially liked the first two. This time, I am adding Ceylon to the list. Polvoron - The European Version of Chinese Cookies

Someone recently bought back this box of polvoron from the Philippines. It's a soft and very crumble Spanish shortbread made of flour, sugar, milk and nuts... and since this is from the Philippines, shortening of course. =P The Philippines adopted it as a part of their culture, apparently, because they were a colony of Spain. This box came with a giddying number of interesting assorted flavours - original, cashew, peanut, coffee, cookies and cream, ube (purple yam), and pinipig (immature grains of glutinous rice pounded until flat and toasted, or rice crispies). The flavours had me gleefully excited... I had tried ube-flavoured desserts in the Philippines, but not in a baked product. Also, I had never heard of pinipig before this.

Tiramisu Daifuku vs Matcha Adzuki Daifuku by Luckin Coffee

I had been impressed by previous attempts trying Luckin's desserts, namely their cheesecakes and strawberry daifuku, due to the relatively pure ingredients (few artificial additives or preservatives), low price, convenience and great taste balance. So when they launched a new red and green flavor for Christmas - Matcha Adzuki Daifuku, I thought I'd try it along with the remaining untried flavour, Tiramisu Daifuku. First off, the matcha one. Actually, the green tea flavor wasn't really matcha, as real Japanese matcha is more grassy. It's more like the Chinese jasmine woody green tea type of tea flavor.

Tie Guan Yin Sun Cake by Ruyi Tang

Today, I'm featuring the first in a series of interestingly-flavoured sun cakes by Ru Yi Tang (如邑堂) in Taiwan. And I guess them being called sun cakes vaguely relates to the theme of the new year, as the sunrise signals a new beginning. I ordered a box of 5 flavours - original, tie guan yin (a type of processed oolong tea), rose, honey and cheese.

Another specialty Japanese brand recently opened its doors in Singapore - Giraffa Curry Bread Specialist . Its signature item is the Curry Cheese Bread. Unlike other breads, this one is deep fried. Furthermore, as if a layer of bread wasn't enough, it is also breaded... which makes it a breaded bread, incidentally. Apart from that, its curry and cheese are reportedly quite special too, so I was curious to see if it lived up to the hype.

Financiers by Chihiro Sweets Shop - My New Favourite Retail Financiers

Chihiro Sweets Shop is a brand I only heard about recently, probably because it has only ONE shop in Osaka, apparently, and so is limited in production volume. But Chocolate Origin recently brought the brand in, so I got to try these premium treats, in quite a number of flavors too! Apparently they were baked in Singapore according to the shop attendant. I picked up 5 flavours - cultured butter (also known as fermented butter), hazelnut, earl grey, pistachio and dark chocolate. In this post, we tried the Cultured Butter Financier, Hazelnut Financier and Earl Grey Financier first. (This is the post for Pistachio and Dark Chocolate .) And I was blown away by the extremely high quality of each! Overall, each had the thick moistness of perfect butter cakes that the best gourmet pastry chefs produce, but of course with the almond powder texture of financiers. Roasted Barley Milk Tea with Japanese Mugicha from Saga - easy DIY recipe for home

Mugicha, or Japanese roasted barley tea, is normally served plain, usually without even sugar, warm or cold. But with all the bubble tea stores putting non-conventional teas on the menu, I decided to experiment making Milk Mugicha to see how it tasted... it ended being more like a mugicha latte. I used a popular mugicha brand called Sanei Kosan from Saga Prefecture, Japan.

Ruskology 302: Matcha Chocolate Gouter de Roi Rusk by Gateau Festa Harada

As promised, this is Matcha Gouter de Roi chocolate-coated rusk, another seasonal offering by Gateau Festa Harada, available only from the months of October to late-May each year. It is also region-limited and only available at their stores in the Kansai region (where Kyoto and Osaka are located), so it may be especially tricky to get your hands on. But if you are in Kansai for sakura viewing, you'll be able to scoop this and the Triple Berry Gouter de Roi up together. Like the triple berry version, not only was the chocolate coating flavoured with matcha, but I think so was the bread used to make the rusk. As you can see, it is not white, but yellowish green in shade. On top of that, there is a secret nuanced ingredient that I discovered on the ingredients list (further below) - yuzu peel! Finally, there is also gold foil powder sprinkled on top for effect, very fitting for a traditional flavour representing gravitas.
