Little Butter Latte vs Butter Americano by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute. After that, they also released a Butter Americano, 1 year after the latte, which I also just tried. They also recently launched an apple version called Buddy Apple Butter Latte . (Scroll down for the updated section on the Americano version.)

Mocchurin Kinako and Mocchurin Double Sesame Donuts by Mister Donut

Mister Donut is already famous for their Pon de Ring donut which already supposed to be mochi-like, so I was curious about the Mocchurin range when it launched in Singapore. I tried the Mocchurin Kinako and Mocchurin Double Sesame flavours.

Buttercrème Latté by Zus Coffee, Malaysia

Zus Coffee, a modern tech-based cafe from Malaysia with a wide range of flavours, just opened in Singapore. It got me excited to try, as I had a good experience with similar China chains but had not yet come across a good Southeast Asian one. I tried the hot "Buttercrème Latté" first. Although no such word as "buttercrème" exists, I assume it means "buttercream", in which case it would be a combination of butter and sugar whipped into a creamy texture. And I assume that they then add this to a caffe latte. As I had ordered takeaway (there were very few seats), most of the creme had melted, but you could still see a thin layer floating on top that was slightly lighter in colour than the latte under it. And under certain lighting and reflection (second image below, click to enlarge), you can actually see the oil droplets from the melted cream floating on the drink's surface. Normally, such visible grease might be off-putting, but since it is a type of b...

White Champaca Milk Tea and Jasmine Apple Milk Tea by Molly Tea

Molly Tea is a jasmine milk tea specialist from China that opened its first branches in Singapore in recent years, so I took the chance to try a couple of their menu items that I've not seen elsewhere before.

Milo Tiramisu Latte vs Original Tiramisu Latte by Luckin Coffee vs Buttercream Tiramisu Latte by Fore Coffee

(July 2026 update: I tried Luckin's latest version, Tiramisu Latte with Milo, where they used Milo for the cocoa malt flavour in conjunction with Singapore's National Day. Scroll down for the review.) (May 2026 update: I also recently tried Fore Coffee's similar drink, the Buttercream Tiramisu Latte. The review is right below.) This is not the first time I've tried this Tiramisu Latte by Luckin Coffee, but last year, I strongly disliked it so I didn't post. This year, there was a huge improvement, which I'll explain below, so I thought it worth posting about. First up, one thing to note is that they only have the iced version. As always, I selected the least sweet option. This is how it looked like visually. The latte part looks like chocolate milk or hot cocoa in the colour, but even darker with what looks like extra cocoa powder sinking to the bottom to give it a thin dark brown layer below. The top looks like a typical milk foam layer commonly found in Asi...

What is a dry beer or sake? Asahi Super Dry Beer vs non-dry beer, sake, and dry sake

I went for a S$6 beer tasting workshop that answered this question with side-by-side samples to compare. It was organised by Asahi Beer in July 2023 for the launch of their updated Superdry Beer taste. They not only let us try different types of beer, but also sake , because the concept of dry and not dry started from sake.

Glutinous Green Milk Tea by Chagee, and a bonus Cocoa Oolong Milk Tea sample

I didn't recognise this "Glutinous Green Milk Tea" on Chagee's menu, so I ordered it to see what it was about, and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. First, what is glutinous green tea? It is apparently a normal green tea brewed with what Chagee calls a "plant native to Yunnan" in its in-app description (see image below). After further research, it seems that there are two separate plants used - one is the normal tea plant for the green tea, and the other is the Yunnan-native herb which goes by the name of Semnostachya menglaensis or nuo mi xiang (糯米香) in Chinese. Both the tea and the nuo mi xiang seem to be sourced from Yunnan. Besides green tea, nuo mi xiang is also often paired with puer tea. Besides its use to flavour foods such as tea, it is apparently also used in traditional Chinese medicines to aid digestion, detoxify and reduce internal "heat", but I don't know how validated by research it is. It literally means "glutin...

Princess Su Butterfly Pastry (Palmiers): Assorted Flavours Reviewed (Original, Sea Salt, Dark Chocolate Nut, Hazelnut, Strawberry, Coconut, Earl Grey, Scallion Oil, Quinoa, Sesame)

I recently discovered a French-style patisserie bakery in Shanghai called Princess Su Butterfly Pastry (苏王妃蝴蝶酥) specialising in French-style palmiers. It seems to have originated in Shanghai, although I couldn't find details on its establishment or when it was founded.

Ceylon Yuan Yang with Milk vs First Crush Tea Latte by Luckin Coffee

Luckin launched another interesting milky drink for their festive menu this Lunar New Year, so I tried it when I got a good coupon. This is Ceylon Yuan Yang with milk. Yuan Yang (鸳鸯) refers to a pair of male (yuan) and female (yang) Mandarin ducks, and figuratively means a good and complementary pairing. When it comes to drinks, it refers to a mix of tea and coffee, which I do agree is a great combination. Another term for it as applied to matcha would be the dirty matcha, although the term Yuan Yang is usually used only when the tea component is Chinese in origin. Besides this drink, Luckin has also launched other Yuan Yang drinks, all with their standard coffee, but they vary the type of tea used. Previously, I had tried their Summer Breeze, Jasmine and Spring variations and especially liked the first two. This time, I am adding Ceylon to the list. And look at the cute Chinese New Year cup sleeve. (I removed it so you can see the gradient in the next picture.) Ceylon tea is known for...

Pawa Bakery Bagel flavours reviewed: Purple Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Pandan Pistachio, Matcha White Chocolate Sourdough, Black Sesame Walnut and Coffee Boy

I recently went on two Pawa Bakery bagel-sampling sprees because the queues were short at the time I happened to pass buy. As I love vegetable or plant flavours for pastries, I got tried all of them that were available at the time. Specifically, they were the Pandan Pistachio Bagel, Purple Sweet Potato Bagel, Pumpkin Bagel and Matcha White Chocolate Sourdough Bagel (or more accurately a Green Tea Orange Peel Bagel) on my first visit, and Black Sesame Walnut Bagel and Coffee Boy Bagel on my second. I also tried their limited edition Sakura Bagel , but featured it separately.
