Little Butter Latte vs Butter Americano by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute. And recently, they also released a Butter Americano, 1 year after the latte, which I also just tried. (Scroll down for the updated section on the Americano version.)

Japanese Red Snow Crab Ice Cream by Tomoda Sailing

I saw this at JEM's Don Don Donki sometime back and HAD to try it. Japanese crab ice cream, with salt from Republic of Kiribati or Christmas Island... I have no idea why that is special though. It's by Tomoda Sailing, which specializes in crab and seafood, rather than ice cream or desserts. Plus check out the natural ingredients... Fresh cream and 紅ズワイ蟹 (beni-zuwaigani or red snow crab or Chionoecetes japonicus). I've never even eaten it as a savoury meal I think... To think that my first time trying it is as an ice cream! Kokutou Kinako Bun by Gokoku Japanese Bakery

This is my second post featuring Gokoku Japanese Bakery's seasonal items themed around Okinawan brown sugar (kokutou). The previous post was the Okinawan Brown Sugar Kokutou Raisin Bun , which was absolutely delightful. This time I tried the Kokutou Kinako Bun, which I loved even more. First, I must explain what toasted soy butter or perhaps kinako butter is. I first discovered it when I tried WowButter from the US, which was marketed as a peanut butter substitute. Instead of peanut butter, however, I thought it tasted exactly like roasted kinako powder. Compared to peanuts, kinako has much stronger grain, malt and earthy notes, and might less of what I might describe as the tinge of corn flavour that is prominent especially in American peanut varieties. This bun is like a normal fluffy bun of theirs, but with a thick layer of a kokutou-kinako spread or cream filling running down the middle, as you can see in the pictures.

Unicorn Latte Art at Keong Saik Bakery

This was the most intricate latte art I'd seen made from pure foamed milk and coffee. It was at a cafe not particularly advertised for latte art, as they are more famous for their East meets West pastries, and so it took me completely by surprise. It's also cute that it's a unicorn, as it's truly unique. It was from Keong Saik Bakery, a cafe at Holland Village, Singapore. It's not the first time I've seen pretty latte art from here though. This classic swan was another beautiful one I saw.

Brown Sugar Plum Latte by Luckin Coffee

After the interesting experience with the Pear Latte by Luckin Coffee, I tried another of their eyebrow-raising latte flavours combining fruit, milk and coffee - Brown Sugar Plum Latte. The brown sugar plum combination is apparently a classic flavour, often found in candies, but I've not tried that either. The iced latte version by Luckin turned out to be a rather interesting one with a flavour profile that evolved as the iced melted. Visually, it looked like an ordinary latte, so I took a photo of the marketing poster below as well. On first sip, it tasted like a brown sugar coffee latte, with an interesting hint of salted plum. For some reason, it came across more as slightly savoury, rather than sour. Because the coffee and sourness were so mild, there were two emergent tastes.

Different Oysters at Legal Seafoods - Comparing Wianno, East Beach Blonde, Naked Cowboy and Little Shemogue varieties of live shucked oysters

During my trip to the US, I visited a branch of Legal Sea Foods in Boston, which was really a seafood adventure for me! I usually am not a huge fan of seafood, maybe with the exceptions of sashimi and chilli crab (although mainly for the gravy). But by trying the different stuff on the menu here, I learned about the nuances of seafood! What left the greatest impression on me was their oyster platter, which allowed me to try different types of oysters and appreciate the difference. Now firstly, I didn't even know there was a difference to oysters. At the buffets in Singapore, I just thought all oysters were the same. But Legal Sea Foods did a wonderful job with this detailed explanation of the different varieties. (Click to enlarge.) (Sorry about the date stamp. The mangled word is "Little".) We ordered three each of the Wianno, East Beach Blonde, Naked Cowboy and Little Shemogue. All I have to comment is that I could taste in the respective oysters the elements describ...

Sakura Tiramisu by Dulcet & Studio

I was passing by Dulcet & Studio at Ngee Ann City sometime back, and chanced upon this beautiful sight... It's Sakura Tiramisu. Isn't it just a wonderful piece of art? But it didn't really taste like the traditional Japanese salty, herby and sour plum sakura.

Glutinous Green Milk Tea by Chagee, and a bonus Cocoa Oolong Milk Tea sample

I didn't recognise this "Glutinous Green Milk Tea" on Chagee's menu, so I ordered it to see what it was about, and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. First, what is glutinous green tea? It is apparently a normal green tea brewed with what Chagee calls a "plant native to Yunnan" in its in-app description (see image below). After further research, it seems that there are two separate plants used - one is the normal tea plant for the green tea, and the other is the Yunnan-native herb which goes by the name of Semnostachya menglaensis or nuo mi xiang (糯米香) in Chinese. Both the tea and the nuo mi xiang seem to be sourced from Yunnan. Besides green tea, nuo mi xiang is also often paired with puer tea. Besides its use to flavour foods such as tea, it is apparently also used in traditional Chinese medicines to aid digestion, detoxify and reduce internal "heat", but I don't know how validated by research it is. It literally means "glutin...

Pistachio Oat Latte (both iced and hot) vs Pistachio Dirty by Luckin Coffee

After trying Luckin's Toffee Hazelnut Oat Latte , I found that oat and nuttiness were a good combination, especially for those who like or need dairy-free drinks. So I tried their Pistachio Oat Latte, especially since pistachio-flavoured cafe treats are all the rage these days. This drink officially boasts "3 pistachios and 2 cashews" per cup, so it's also a Cashew Oat Latte rolled in. Based on their latest in-app description, the pistachios are from California and the cashews are from Vietnam. (I tried the Pistachio Dirty months later when it was released, and also the hot version during the current March 2026 relaunch. Comparisons are further below.) Visually, the oat milk portion was quite green indeed, as you can see at the bottom part of the cup. That bottom part was also where I started drinking from via the straw.

Blue-ming Coconut Latte by Luckin Coffee

The name of this drink was a head-scratcher, but in essence, it seems to be a normal coconut latte, except that it has whipped cheese cream with it. It was the combination of coconut milk and cheese cream that I found interesting enough to try. Other than that, as you can see in the picture, it does come in a very beautiful pastel blue colour, which is apparently completely naturally derived from spirulina. It is this colour that the drink is named after, although I don't understand the "ming" reference. Some official marketing material refers to blue-ming as a homonym or pun of "blooming", which could be referring to the algae "bloom" which does happen for spirulina, although that results in the typical green algae colour, so it's a bit of a weird and potentially disgusting reference. It could also refer to the Chinese New Year or spring season where flowers are thought of as blooming, but it's a bit of a tenuous link.
