Little Butter Latte vs Butter Americano by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute. After that, they also released a Butter Americano, 1 year after the latte, which I also just tried. They also recently launched an apple version called Buddy Apple Butter Latte . I went for a S$6 beer tasting workshop that answered this question with side-by-side samples to compare. It was organised by Asahi Beer in July 2023 for the launch of their updated Superdry Beer taste. They not only let us try different types of beer, but also sake , because the concept of dry and not dry started from sake.

Cloud Cold Brew by Luckin Coffee

This was another interesting combination by Luckin. It is a cheese foam cold brew coffee. While it might seem like a standard cloud drink, usually cold brews tend to be offered by Western coffee chains, while the "cloud" part, which is really like a cheese foam, is usually offered by Oriental milk tea chains. So I haven't noticed this particular combination much. I was super happy that they had a no syrup option, so I went for that. And I totally loved it. The "cloud" milk foam itself (tasted without the coffee) was satisfyingly salty, true to the "cheese foam" formula, which I think is a lovely combination with milk in drinks. As expected, the creaminess resembled that of cheese rather than milk or butter, something like a liquefied cream cheese icing, but with more salt and less sugar. After mixing it in, it was excellent.

Malioboro Soft Bone Chicken - Chicken You Can Eat Whole, Bones and All

I was intrigued when I saw this item on the menu of Malioboro Soft Bone Chicken @ Juront Point - "soft bone chicken with salted egg sauce". Not only am I a fan of salted egg sauce, but I really wanted to see if the chicken bones were really completely edible... well, for a quick answer, see the second image. The Malioboro chain originated in Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. They pressure cook the chicken to get its bones soft, and apparently, there's a "correct" way to do it to get the desired soft bone results. I presume they then proceed to deep fry or cook the chicken further if the dish requires it. Apparently, every 100g of chicken bone contains about 9.1 grams of calcium and 5.6mg of iron... the daily recommended calcium requirement for adults is only about 1 gram. So you probably don't want to eat this too often either. Anyway, the bones were really soft... the image above shows my plastic fork piercing the drumstick bone, which is usually very tough.

Shinano Gold Apple from Aomori, Japan - my favourite apple variety

I have tried a few Japanese gourmet apple varieties, but decided to post about the Shinano Gold Apple from Aomori, as it is currently my favourite, and a very premium apple variety indeed. I understand that this is a cross of the Golden Delicious variety and another one called Senshu, which in turn is a cross of Fuji and Toko varieties. (Toko is in turn a derivative of Ourin or Ohrin variety, which is another Aomori apple I tried, but which I didn't like as much.) [Update: While this particular batch of apples were grown in Aomori, an anonymous commenter pointed out that the breed was first developed in Nagano Prefecture, and that "Shinano" is an old name for the Nagano area. And I later found that it was first bred in 1993 at the Nagano Fruit Tree Experiment Station. So thank you to the commenter for this. I suppose Aomori farms actively scout for new promising varieties to cultivate, and have since started cultivating this species taken from that Station. Besides that,...

Ruskology 302: Matcha Chocolate Gouter de Roi Rusk by Gateau Festa Harada

As promised, this is Matcha Gouter de Roi chocolate-coated rusk, another seasonal offering by Gateau Festa Harada, available only from the months of October to late-May each year. It is also region-limited and only available at their stores in the Kansai region (where Kyoto and Osaka are located), so it may be especially tricky to get your hands on. But if you are in Kansai for sakura viewing, you'll be able to scoop this and the Triple Berry Gouter de Roi up together. Like the triple berry version, not only was the chocolate coating flavoured with matcha, but I think so was the bread used to make the rusk. As you can see, it is not white, but yellowish green in shade. On top of that, there is a secret nuanced ingredient that I discovered on the ingredients list (further below) - yuzu peel! Finally, there is also gold foil powder sprinkled on top for effect, very fitting for a traditional flavour representing gravitas.

Buddy Apple Butter Latte by Luckin Coffee (iced and hot versions reviewed)

There's yet another super interesting fruit latte by Luckin Coffee. From the app description, it sounded like some caramel apple cheesecake transformed into a latte. It comprises salted cheese foam on top with what seems to be an apple-flavoured version of their Little Butter Latte beneath. Then, it is topped with an apple chip and a drizzle of caramel sauce.

Glutinous Green Milk Tea by Chagee, and a bonus Cocoa Oolong Milk Tea sample

I didn't recognise this "Glutinous Green Milk Tea" on Chagee's menu, so I ordered it to see what it was about, and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. First, what is glutinous green tea? It is apparently a normal green tea brewed with what Chagee calls a "plant native to Yunnan" in its in-app description (see image below). After further research, it seems that there are two separate plants used - one is the normal tea plant for the green tea, and the other is the Yunnan-native herb which goes by the name of Semnostachya menglaensis or nuo mi xiang (糯米香) in Chinese. Both the tea and the nuo mi xiang seem to be sourced from Yunnan. Besides green tea, nuo mi xiang is also often paired with puer tea. Besides its use to flavour foods such as tea, it is apparently also used in traditional Chinese medicines to aid digestion, detoxify and reduce internal "heat", but I don't know how validated by research it is. It literally means "glutin...

Buttercrème Latté by Zus Coffee, Malaysia

Zus Coffee, a modern tech-based cafe from Malaysia with a wide range of flavours, just opened in Singapore. It got me excited to try, as I had a good experience with similar China chains but had not yet come across a good Southeast Asian one. I tried the hot "Buttercrème Latté" first. Although no such word as "buttercrème" exists, I assume it means "buttercream", in which case it would be a combination of butter and sugar whipped into a creamy texture. And I assume that they then add this to a caffe latte. As I had ordered takeaway (there were very few seats), most of the creme had melted, but you could still see a thin layer floating on top that was slightly lighter in colour than the latte under it. And under certain lighting and reflection (second image below, click to enlarge), you can actually see the oil droplets from the melted cream floating on the drink's surface. The Original Tigresse by Gateau Festa Harada - fancy financier with chocolate ganache

This is yet another amazing product by Gateau Festa Harada. I previously posted on their rusk products and their leaf pie . And the cake itself looked very tigressy indeed... with its chocolate-feckled and orangey-brown appearance. It's basically a very moist and chocolatey cake. The surface of the chocolate was actually picture-perfect smooth when we bought it. Pardon the blotch... it was a casualty of transit as this was flown in from Osaka. Among the list of premium ingredients are: fresh cream, liquor (type not stated), almond poudre (or almond powder), and butter.
