Ruskology 101 - Original Butter Rusk and Hors d'oeuvre Rusk Sommelier by Gateau Festa Harada

I never heard of the term "rusk" until my parents chanced upon this long line outside the Osaka Gateau Festa Harada (GFH) store at Hanshin Umeda, and decided to buy their products back for us to try. You may have already read my post on leaf pies , which featured another product of GFH's. But their signature item is their rusk- bread that is toasted until it is completely crispy through and through, and I have two to share about today. First up is their classic rusk - butter sugar rusk, or Gouter de Roi as they call it. Each "individually-wrapped" packet comes with two pieces.

What is a dry beer or sake? Asahi Super Dry Beer vs non-dry beer, sake, and dry sake

I went for a S$6 beer tasting workshop that answered this question with side-by-side samples to compare. It was organised by Asahi Beer in July 2023 for the launch of their updated Superdry Beer taste. They not only let us try different types of beer, but also sake , because the concept of dry and not dry started from sake.

Glutinous Green Milk Tea by Chagee, and a bonus Cocoa Oolong Milk Tea sample

I didn't recognise this "Glutinous Green Milk Tea" on Chagee's menu, so I ordered it to see what it was about, and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. First, what is glutinous green tea? It is apparently a normal green tea brewed with what Chagee calls a "plant native to Yunnan" in its in-app description (see image below). After further research, it seems that there are two separate plants used - one is the normal tea plant for the green tea, and the other is the Yunnan-native herb which goes by the name of Semnostachya menglaensis or nuo mi xiang (糯米香) in Chinese. Both the tea and the nuo mi xiang seem to be sourced from Yunnan. Besides green tea, nuo mi xiang is also often paired with puer tea. Besides its use to flavour foods such as tea, it is apparently also used in traditional Chinese medicines to aid digestion, detoxify and reduce internal "heat", but I don't know how validated by research it is. It literally means "glutin...

Hawthorn Soft Crisp by Bao's Pastry

Hawthorn is an unusual fruit that is not seen often in Singapore except for some niche traditional childhood sweets and snacks, so it was interesting to see it as a pastry filling at this trending bakery, Bao's Pastry. What's even more interesting is how they are sold in a big resealable bag, almost like you are supposed to binge on them. The first thing I noted is that the ingredients list was only available on their in-store price display (click to enlarge image below), and it wasn't printed on the packet itself. Also, it doesn't list all the ingredients, just some "core" ones, which are all probably the better ingredients from the full list. For example, expected ingredients such as sugar or salt aren't listed, so we don't really know if there were artificial additives. Nonetheless, I thought it was of decent quality for the price overall after the taste test. It was S$7.90 for 9 pieces.

Shinano Gold Apple from Aomori, Japan - my favourite apple variety

I have tried a few Japanese gourmet apple varieties, but decided to post about the Shinano Gold Apple from Aomori, as it is currently my favourite, and a very premium apple variety indeed. I understand that this is a cross of the Golden Delicious variety and another one called Senshu, which in turn is a cross of Fuji and Toko varieties. (Toko is in turn a derivative of Ourin or Ohrin variety, which is another Aomori apple I tried, but which I didn't like as much.) [Update: While this particular batch of apples were grown in Aomori, an anonymous commenter pointed out that the breed was first developed in Nagano Prefecture, and that "Shinano" is an old name for the Nagano area. And I later found that it was first bred in 1993 at the Nagano Fruit Tree Experiment Station. So thank you to the commenter for this. I suppose Aomori farms actively scout for new promising varieties to cultivate, and have since started cultivating this species taken from that Station. Besides that,...

Little Butter Latte vs Butter Americano by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute. After that, they also released a Butter Americano, 1 year after the latte, which I also just tried. They also recently launched an apple version called Buddy Apple Butter Latte . Pandan Coconut Latte by Luckin Coffee - Hot and Cold Versions Compared for this lovely dairy-free drink

Following Luckin Coffee's publicity about their new memorandum of understanding to purchase coconut milk from Banggai Islands Regency in Indonesia, which they have called their "Coconut Island", they have been launching and promoting more coconut-based drinks. I thought this Pandan Coconut Latte by them was interesting enough in name, so I tried it. It is currently a Singapore-exclusive flavour, but I think it is one of my favourite drinks on their menu and they would do well to offer it elsewhere too. I bought both the hot and cold versions to compare and was rewarded with a free sticker set (which I did not need and gave away to a random little girl who passed by). Based on the marketing graphics, they also seem to have some partnership with Duolingo, which the different languages in the sticker set (see image below) also reflect. This Pandan Coconut Latte turned out to be possibly among my favourite Luckin drinks, perhaps on par with their Little Butter Latte . I trie...

Pear Play Latte (Hot/Iced) - Gardenia Pear Flavoured Caffe Latte by Luckin Coffee (formerly Pair Hug Latte)

(June 2026 update: Luckin brought the Pair Hug Latte back with the new name of Pear Play Latte for the Toy Story collaboration. I review the latest version last below.) Luckin has launched another very curious flavour that I had to try - a fruit-flavoured latte. They called this the "Pair Hug Latte", which turned out to be a word play for a pear-flavoured latte. I had seen their fruit Americanos before, but those weren't paired with milk. Plus, this pear latte also had the scent of gardenia flower, according to the in-app description.

Japanese Red Snow Crab Ice Cream by Tomoda Sailing

I saw this at JEM's Don Don Donki sometime back and HAD to try it. Japanese crab ice cream, with salt from Republic of Kiribati or Christmas Island... I have no idea why that is special though. It's by Tomoda Sailing, which specializes in crab and seafood, rather than ice cream or desserts. Plus check out the natural ingredients... Fresh cream and 紅ズワイ蟹 (beni-zuwaigani or red snow crab or Chionoecetes japonicus). I've never even eaten it as a savoury meal I think... To think that my first time trying it is as an ice cream! Jasmine Cloud Latte by Luckin Coffee

After a good experience with Luckin's Cloud Cold Brew , I was eager to try the new Jasmine Cloud Latte. I love cheese foam and milk teas, so I thought this would be a good idea. Note that this contains coffee, so it is a cheese foam yuan yang or "dirty" tea.. The cheese foam is the white layer on top, and the white layer below is the milk. However, it turned out to be a disappointment.
