Pistachio Oat Latte vs Pistachio Dirty by Luckin Coffee

After trying Luckin's Toffee Hazelnut Oat Latte , I found that oat and nuttiness were a good combination, especially for those who like or need dairy-free drinks. So I tried their Pistachio Oat Latte, especially since pistachio-flavoured cafe treats are all the rage these days. This drink officially boasts "3 pistachios and 2 cashews" per cup, so it's also a Cashew Oat Latte rolled in. (I tried their Pistachio Dirty months later when it was released. Scroll down for the comparison.) Visually, the oat milk portion was quite green indeed, as you can see at the bottom part of the cup. That bottom part was also where I started drinking from via the straw.

Popular Curry Cheese Bread by Giraffa Curry Bread Specialist from Japan

Another specialty Japanese brand recently opened its doors in Singapore - Giraffa Curry Bread Specialist . Its signature item is the Curry Cheese Bread. Unlike other breads, this one is deep fried. Furthermore, as if a layer of bread wasn't enough, it is also breaded... which makes it a breaded bread, incidentally. Apart from that, its curry and cheese are reportedly quite special too, so I was curious to see if it lived up to the hype.

Little Butter Latte by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute.

I went for a S$6 beer tasting workshop that answered this question with side-by-side samples to compare. It was organised by Asahi Beer in July 2023 for the launch of their updated Superdry Beer taste. They not only let us try different types of beer, but also sake, because the concept of dry and not dry started from sake.

Pandan Coconut Latte by Luckin Coffee - Hot and Cold Versions Compared for this lovely dairy-free drink

Following Luckin Coffee's publicity about their new memorandum of understanding to purchase coconut milk from Banggai Islands Regency in Indonesia, which they have called their "Coconut Island", they have been launching and promoting more coconut-based drinks. I thought this Pandan Coconut Latte by them was interesting enough in name, so I tried it. It is currently a Singapore-exclusive flavour, but I think it is one of my favourite drinks on their menu and they would do well to offer it elsewhere too. I bought both the hot and cold versions to compare and was rewarded with a free sticker set (which I did not need and gave away to a random little girl who passed by). Based on the marketing graphics, they also seem to have some partnership with Duolingo, which the different languages in the sticker set (see image below) also reflect. This Pandan Coconut Latte turned out to be possibly among my favourite Luckin drinks, perhaps on par with their Little Butter Latte . I trie...

Buah Long Long Juice

The name was bewildering enough for me that I didn't need to think of any creative twist for this post's title... I'd never have guessed that there'd be a fruit named "buah long long"... but well, yes, it does exist. The official name is Spondias dulcis , and buah long long is how the Singaporean Chinese know it. It's known as kedondong in Indonesia, pomme cythere in Trinidad & Tobago and some other countries, June plum in Bermuda and Jamaica, juplon in Costa Rica, golden apple in Barbados and Guyana, jobo indio in Venezuela, cajá-manga and cajarana in Brazil (see, they couldn't even decide on one name in the same country), amra in Malaysia, and quả cóc in Vietnam. That's a mind-boggling list of names if I've ever seen one. What's more amazing is that its juice is being sold by a rather common food stall. Roasted Barley Milk Tea with Japanese Mugicha from Saga - easy DIY recipe for home

Mugicha, or Japanese roasted barley tea, is normally served plain, usually without even sugar, warm or cold. But with all the bubble tea stores putting non-conventional teas on the menu, I decided to experiment making Milk Mugicha to see how it tasted... it ended being more like a mugicha latte. I used a popular mugicha brand called Sanei Kosan from Saga Prefecture, Japan.

Okashi Gaku Japanese Vending Machine Desserts - Strawberry Shortcake and Custard Pudding

By now, vending machine cakes aren't that new even in Singapore anymore, and maybe not in Asia. But when it first came out, I was curious to understand the concept as a business idea... Was the taste comparable to what you could get at a cafe? Was it logistically and operationally leaner than other distribution channels? Could they really deliver value in terms of how much they charged for the quality? So when Okashi Gaku landed in Singapore in late 2022, I did a survey on 2 of its more classic offerings - the Strawberry Shortcake and the Custard Pudding.

Cloud Cold Brew by Luckin Coffee

This was another interesting combination by Luckin. It is a cheese foam cold brew coffee. While it might seem like a standard cloud drink, usually cold brews tend to be offered by Western coffee chains, while the "cloud" part, which is really like a cheese foam, is usually offered by Oriental milk tea chains. So I haven't noticed this particular combination much. I was super happy that they had a no syrup option, so I went for that. And I totally loved it. The "cloud" milk foam itself (tasted without the coffee) was satisfyingly salty, true to the "cheese foam" formula, which I think is a lovely combination with milk in drinks. As expected, the creaminess resembled that of cheese rather than milk or butter, something like a liquefied cream cheese icing, but with more salt and less sugar. After mixing it in, it was excellent.

And now for something that I would say, with the right setup, approaches the realm of soul food... Rose pastry . (Or Chinese rose petal cakes. 嘉华鲜花饼) Each bag came with six individually-wrapped pieces. A friend bought this back from China. It's called various names due to translation issues - flower cake, rose pie, rose pastry, rose bread, flower pastry and so on. When I first saw this, I was really excited about its uniqueness. But to be honest, when I first tried it, I had a bit of trouble getting used to the rosy fragrance, which I had normally associated with body care products, filling my palate.
