Little Butter Latte vs Butter Americano by Luckin Coffee

The title of this latte had me curious so I had to try. Butter and coffee is a combination I tried as ice cream once, and wished there was more of. But the name of Little Butter Latte is apparently a branding collaboration between Luckin Coffee (瑞幸咖啡 ruì xìng kā fēi) and the Butterbear Cafe in Thailand which has as a mascot called Butterbear ( Nong Mee Noei in Thai). The mascot went viral sometime back in Thailand and the region, getting turned into Line stickers and so on. As you can see from the shop signboard, it's super cute. After that, they also released a Butter Americano, 1 year after the latte, which I also just tried. They also recently launched an apple version called Buddy Apple Butter Latte . Mr Sun Golden Brew by Mr Sun Tea - Fruity Green Tea with Heineken 0.0 (zero alcohol Heineken Beer)

I love the taste of beer, but not the alcohol in it, and am a fan of zero alcohol beers. So when I saw this unique combination of tea and zero alcohol beers, I made the trip down to try. Mr Sun Tea is a Taiwanese bubble tea chain that came to Singapore not too long ago. This drink, called Mr Sun Golden Brew, is one of their signature drinks, and the only one I know of that currently blends beer of any sort with tea, let alone zero alcohol beer. (The next closest drinks I've seen are rice wine teas, such as Osmanthus Rice Wine Milk Tea by Tastea .) Apart from green tea and Heineken beer, there is also a fruity syrup that is added. So the recommended sugar level is 0%, because the fruity syrup already has sugar in it. The first thing I am told when handed the drink, is that it is apparently layered, so I needed to shake it well before drinking. This is not apparent, as the different components (beer, tea and fruity syrup) are all around the same colour. The only clue is that the fiz...

Glutinous Green Milk Tea by Chagee, and a bonus Cocoa Oolong Milk Tea sample

I didn't recognise this "Glutinous Green Milk Tea" on Chagee's menu, so I ordered it to see what it was about, and was pleasantly surprised by the experience. First, what is glutinous green tea? It is apparently a normal green tea brewed with what Chagee calls a "plant native to Yunnan" in its in-app description (see image below). After further research, it seems that there are two separate plants used - one is the normal tea plant for the green tea, and the other is the Yunnan-native herb which goes by the name of Semnostachya menglaensis or nuo mi xiang (糯米香) in Chinese. Both the tea and the nuo mi xiang seem to be sourced from Yunnan. Besides green tea, nuo mi xiang is also often paired with puer tea. Besides its use to flavour foods such as tea, it is apparently also used in traditional Chinese medicines to aid digestion, detoxify and reduce internal "heat", but I don't know how validated by research it is. White Champaca Milk Tea and Jasmine Apple Milk Tea by Molly Tea

Molly Tea is a jasmine milk tea specialist from China that opened its first branches in Singapore in recent years, so I took the chance to try a couple of their menu items that I've not seen elsewhere before.

Buttercrème Latté by Zus Coffee, Malaysia

Zus Coffee, a modern tech-based cafe from Malaysia with a wide range of flavours, just opened in Singapore. It got me excited to try, as I had a good experience with similar China chains but had not yet come across a good Southeast Asian one. I tried the hot "Buttercrème Latté" first. Although no such word as "buttercrème" exists, I assume it means "buttercream", in which case it would be a combination of butter and sugar whipped into a creamy texture. And I assume that they then add this to a caffe latte. As I had ordered takeaway (there were very few seats), most of the creme had melted, but you could still see a thin layer floating on top that was slightly lighter in colour than the latte under it. And under certain lighting and reflection (second image below, click to enlarge), you can actually see the oil droplets from the melted cream floating on the drink's surface. Roasted Barley Milk Tea with Japanese Mugicha from Saga - easy DIY recipe for home

Mugicha, or Japanese roasted barley tea, is normally served plain, usually without even sugar, warm or cold. But with all the bubble tea stores putting non-conventional teas on the menu, I decided to experiment making Milk Mugicha to see how it tasted... it ended being more like a mugicha latte. I used a popular mugicha brand called Sanei Kosan from Saga Prefecture, Japan.

Pawa Bakery Bagel flavours reviewed: Purple Sweet Potato, Pumpkin, Pandan Pistachio, Matcha White Chocolate Sourdough, Black Sesame Walnut and Coffee Boy

I recently went on two Pawa Bakery bagel-sampling sprees because the queues were short at the time I happened to pass buy. As I love vegetable or plant flavours for pastries, I got tried all of them that were available at the time. Specifically, they were the Pandan Pistachio Bagel, Purple Sweet Potato Bagel, Pumpkin Bagel and Matcha White Chocolate Sourdough Bagel (or more accurately a Green Tea Orange Peel Bagel) on my first visit, and Black Sesame Walnut Bagel and Coffee Boy Bagel on my second. I also tried their limited edition Sakura Bagel , but featured it separately.

What is a dry beer or sake? Asahi Super Dry Beer vs non-dry beer, sake, and dry sake

I went for a S$6 beer tasting workshop that answered this question with side-by-side samples to compare. It was organised by Asahi Beer in July 2023 for the launch of their updated Superdry Beer taste. They not only let us try different types of beer, but also sake , because the concept of dry and not dry started from sake.

Review of Original Butter Financier, Earl Grey Financier and Pie d'Amandes (Almond Pie Pastry) by Butter Butler, Tokyo

This review is one of the few negative ones I am writing, because the name of the brand and product was the biggest misnomer ever, so I felt a strong need to warn people to stay away or at least be aware. It is a brand called Butter Butler, and the pastries were purchased from a store in Tokyo, Japan. Their main products are these supposedly butter financiers, along with other French pastries. At first glance, the products, packaging (images below) and brand name seem like they would make for great souvenirs. However, I was in for a huge disappointment. The most important PSA is that it contains more margarine than butter! And while the margarine does have a bit of butter, vegetable oil is listed as the first ingredient, and it also has unspecified other ingredients just listed as "others". (Check out the ingredients list below.) They do use some cultured butter, which is respectable, but using margarine while branding your product and shop as a butter specialist feels extrem...

Pandan Coconut Latte by Luckin Coffee - Hot and Cold Versions Compared for this lovely dairy-free drink

Following Luckin Coffee's publicity about their new memorandum of understanding to purchase coconut milk from Banggai Islands Regency in Indonesia, which they have called their "Coconut Island", they have been launching and promoting more coconut-based drinks. I thought this Pandan Coconut Latte by them was interesting enough in name, so I tried it. It is currently a Singapore-exclusive flavour, but I think it is one of my favourite drinks on their menu and they would do well to offer it elsewhere too. I bought both the hot and cold versions to compare and was rewarded with a free sticker set (which I did not need and gave away to a random little girl who passed by). Based on the marketing graphics, they also seem to have some partnership with Duolingo, which the different languages in the sticker set (see image below) also reflect. This Pandan Coconut Latte turned out to be possibly among my favourite Luckin drinks, perhaps on par with their Little Butter Latte . I trie...
